Mission
We are a team dedicated to the attraction, retention, motivation, and engagement of a diverse group of employees in 18 City Departments responsible for providing government services to Harrisonburg citizens and visitors.
We serve over 850 employees, prospective applicants, and employee families by creating and implementing market-competitive total rewards, training and education, and equitable policies and programs consistent with the City’s vision.
We strive to achieve internal and external customer service success, to be a valuable source of knowledge and information for past, present, and future team members, and to foster a culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all stages of employment.
The Human Resources Department's services include:
- Providing employment;
- Promoting a diversified workforce;
- Developing training programs designed to meet the needs of the workforce by enhancing knowledge, skills, and abilities and preparing employees for future challenges and opportunities;
- Providing employee relations counseling to city employees to improve work relations and the work environment;
- Developing human resources policies to meet the needs of the organization while ensuring compliance;
- Administering a total compensation program which attracts applicants, maintains internal equity, competes in relevant labor markets, and retains high performers;
- Serve in a consultative role with city departments to meet the changing needs of the organization and population.
